Bristol Open Summer Leg - Results
Monday, 14 July 2008

The trip down to Bristol for the bi-annual Bristol Open is always an interesting and enjoyable one. The Bristol Open is a tournament that attracts a wide-range of competitiors from academies throughout England, some highly experienced and looking for the victory, some first-timers looking for experience. It is, however, without fail well-organised and well-attended by all concerned.

Particularly impressive was the number of white belts who decided to go and compete, some of them with as little as one month's training behind them, but all of whom represented themselves extremely well against opponents who in many cases had three or four times their experience (and in at least one case, ten times the experience). No matter what their results, all of them fought well, learned from the competition, and had the enthusiasm for competition stoked to the point they are already looking forward to the next chance to test their skills against new opponents.

The full results were:

Oliver Geddes - Gold Purple Belt Absolute

Altinezio 'Mineiro' Neto - Gold Purple Belt Featherweight

Antiono Henrique Junior - Gold Blue Belt Absolute & Gold Blue Belt Ultra-heavyweight

Grzegorz Nowak - Gold Blue Belt Middleweight

Laurence Griffiths - Gold White Belt Super-heavyweight

Frank Carver - Gold White Belt Juvenile Lightweight

Gavin Loh - Silver Purple Belt Middleweight & Bronze Purple Belt Absolute

Paul Boakye - Bronze White Belt Ultra-heavyweight

Cornell Vclutercrev - Bronze White Belt Medium-heavyweight

Roger wins another World Championship
Monday, 09 June 2008

The image “http://thefightworkspodcast.com/images/bjj-roger-gracie.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. In what was a very full on few weeks Roger managed to fight in Japan and then this weekend fight and win his division in the IBJJF world championships.

Roger faced tough Judo and Jiu Jitsu black belt Leonardo Leite in the final of his weight category.

For some of the match they had been grip fighting from standing until about the 5 minute mark. Leite got a takedown at 5m53s for 2 - 0. At 6m42s Roger managed a sweep to make it 2 - 2. Then Roger worked his way to the mount  and went 9 - 2 ahead. Roger slowly crept up to work the hands in for the choke with under two minutes left and then at the 9m59s mark Roger made Leite tap from the choke.

The long awaited second match of Roger Gracie came and went with the lighting submission we are all used to seeing him use during his grappling matches. In a catch weight match, his opponent the very experienced Yuki Kondo fell into Gracie's game plan as so many others in the past.

In the top billing Josh Barnett beat Jeff Monson to a decision over 3 exciting  rounds. Other big news is that former UFC fighter and Gracie Barra team mate of Roger Gracie, Marcio “Pe De Pano” Cruz has signed to fight in Sengoku and will be fighting in the next edition on June 8th in Sengoku 3.
